The last Department meeting in Academic Year 2016-2017

On 20th June, 2017 the department of Computer Engineering held a regular meeting with students. It was the last meeting for the academic year 2016-2017 and they discussed the following items:
  • Summer Courses and how the students will register with the new online registration systems.
  • Implementing the new flowchart and inform them what the department has a plan to change it and develop it.
  • Open a summer project that will help students to implement and develop a real project within this summer.




A Workshop on Database and its Management by Computer Engineering Department

On Monday, May 29th, 2017, Department of Computer Engineering with the collaboration of Komar Research Center at Komar University of Science and Technology has hosted a workshop on “Databases Design and Basics” with Mr. Hemin Ibrahim as the workshop instructor.

He is an acting chairman of Computer Engineering at Komar University of Science and Technology.


The workshop instructor presented a short introduction to database and how it will help any organization to improve their works. He later within 3 hours workshop discussed steps to design any database and practically the attendants designed a simple database for library and hospital.

Department of Computer Engineering, College of Engineering at Komar University of Science and Technology will host a workshop on “Databases Design and Basics”, Mr. Hemin Ibrahim, chairman of the department will run the training workshop on Monday, May 29th, 2017 in Auditorium Hall, E Building.

Short Bio of the speaker:


Hemin Ibrahim is a faculty member and acting chairperson in computer engineering department at Komar University of Science and Technology where he has been a faculty member since 2014. He was a director of Information Technology office for two years.

Hemin Ibrahim received his first BSc in Mathematics from Salahadding University – Hawler and second BSc in Information Technology at University of Kurdistan – Hawler and his Master degree in Advanced Software Engineering from the University of Sheffield – UK.

Hemin’s teaching interests include programming languages, database, and web technology. His research interests are in the area of programming languages, ranging from theory to design to implementation and learning the machine.

In the last 3 years teaching at Komar University, he gave over 11 different courses in Engineering and Business colleges. In addition, his professional experience and focus has been in three areas, first, teaching and working at the university as an academic area, second, his personal and professional life has been the promotion of and advocacy for computer literacy and Internet connectivity in the public such as e-government. The last area is working as a programmer, devoted to research and practice and putting to use his academic and professional training.

A short abstract of your workshop:


The databases design and basics workshop outline the basic information and principles of designing and understanding the database. It was more about the basics to start working to design basic databases and understand the relationships between the real life requirements and designing the entities.


A Seminar on Automatic Recognition of Kurdish Dialects and Neighbor Languages

Komar Research Center and Computer Engineering Department held a seminar for Dr. Abdulbasit Al-Talabni on automatic recognition of Kurdish dialects and language on Sunday, May 21st, 2017 in the Auditorium Hall of Engineering Building.



Dialect recognition is one of the hottest topics in the speech analysis area. In this study, a system for dialect and language recognition is developed using phonetic and style-based features. The study suggests a new set of features using one-dimensional local binary pattern (LBP). The results show that the proposed LBP set of the feature is useful to improve dialect and language recognition accuracy. The acquired data involved in this study are three Kurdish dialects (Sorani, Badini, and Hawrami) with three neighbor languages (Arabic, Persian, and Turkish). The study proposed a new method to interpret the closeness of the Kurdish dialects and their neighbor languages using confusion matrix and a non-metric multi-dimensional visualization technique. The result shows that the Kurdish dialects can be clustered and linearly separated from the neighbor languages.




Computer Engineering Department participated in University day 2017

On Saturday, April 22nd, 2017, Komar University of Science and Technology, held its annual University Day 2017 to present the academic and social projects, and activities of its students.
Many people from different cities, high school students and students’ family members were among the attendees of the celebration.

Computer Engineering Department had the highest rate of student participation among the departments. CPE had 15 scientific projects out of only 23 students. All students worked hard within the week before the university day event and they prepared very well with 15 different projects.








Computer Engineering Department with 15 strong and scientific projects welcomed their guests and they were happy to see computer students with only 2 and 3 years study in Computer Engineering field can make a project like that.








Seminar: e-Government Implementation Barriers in Kurdistan

Mr Hemin Ibrahim held a seminar on “e-Government Implementation Barriers in Kurdistan” on Wednesday, April 26th, 2017, in the Auditorium Hall of Engineering Building.

He started by an introduction on Government and the benefits of applying e-Government in Kurdistan. He explained that e-government is more about the government not about the electronic part.

The seminar showed all main steps that KRG implemented to establish e-government in Kurdistan and all barriers that affect e-government in Kurdistan. In addition, Mr Hemin showed some data that helped students, faculties, and guests in the seminar to know why we still cannot implement e-government in Kurdistan. However, he covered some examples from developing countries that they implement e-gov in their country.

In the end of the seminar, some attendees asked about some new KRG projects such as Biometrics and Sulaimani court e-system, and how it will be a part of implementing e-government in Kurdistan. Mr Hemin responded all questions and explained that by having new technology, good leadership in IT, we can have a good step for implementing e-Government in KRG.




Meeting and awarded students

On March 15th, 2017 chairman and faculty members in computer engineering department met with students , During meeting they  discussed future activities and some issues in the department . In addition, the  Department has awarded  Nur Mahdi, Khalid Abdulwahab, and Vania Kamal as top three students that they got highest GPA in Fall 2016 semester. After the event all students has been invited to lunch. 

Department of Computer Engineering supports student efforts to take the lead in shaping the ethics, knowledge, skills and living environment at komar university of Science and Technology.



Nur Mahdi as a first ran student in Fall 2016 said: "Participating in these kind of events will give us more information about our department, courses and curriculum, also students are encouraged and motivated to study hard , In addition it shows us the importance of GPA"

Vania Kamal as a third Rank student said: " It was a really useful and successful event that help students to clearly understand their department's flowchart and chairman's plan for left semesters also discussing their problems, ideas and suggestions with chairman and instructors, in addition it was encouraging students to get interest for their major and trying to develop it. So I could say that this kind of event is necessary for all departments at least once at a semester for making our university more professional."


Also Dr. Kawa VP for Admin talked to students and he explains some issues related to departments.








Scientific trip to NRT TV

On December 20th, 2016, around 24 students and faculty members of the Department of Computer Engineering visited the NRT digital media center. Students were welcomed by the NRT Television staff and a special warm welcome from Mr. Karwan Gaznay, the head of digital media at NRT. After enjoying a presentation from Mr. Karwan about the NRT digital media and how this media using technology and  the impact of computer in their daily work. Komar University of science and technology students had the opportunity to discuss , debate and learn  how to update, use and work in their website and applications practically.
 
Within one hour students understood  how their academic courses such as Introduction to Web technology and Fundamental of Database Systems have been applied in the reality. Also students in website course were happy to see how the number one website in Kurdistan works.

Competition between Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering

On December 6, 2016, a competition was held between students from the Department of Civil Engineering and students from the Department of Computer Engineering as part of the constantly ongoing entertainment activities at KUST. Five students from each department triggered the event by asking such questions as Zhiran Taha, Ayub Qadir, Soma Jaza, Evan Arsalan and Basak Mohammed from civil engineering as Rawezh Yasin, Wlyan Kamaran, Mohammed Ismail, Lawk Mohammed and Ahmed Hussein from Computer Engineering also asked theirs.  The competition commenced with a number of general questions on various disciplines including science, mathematics, space and Kurdistan.  Every participant who answered a question correctly earned 2 points.
The one-hour competition engaged 200 students from all departments.  The students said that they had great fun participating and that it was both an entertaining and an educating experience at the same time. The conclusion of the event met a big round of applause as the Civil Engineering students won the day with a total score of 21 points, leaving the Computer Engineering students one and a half points short of getting even.





















Food Sale Fundraising

On November 20, 2016 all faculties and 24 students in Computer Engineering department with some students in Petroleum, Business and MLS were participated Food Sale Fundraising. Within 5 days students prepared 62 different dishes and they sale it within 3 hours. The funds to the senior house in Slemani.























Welcoming prospective students in Open House

On November 12th, 2016 Department of Computer Engineering invited current students to attend and participate for welcoming prospective students (Hema, Nur, Mohammed, Wlyan, Ara, Nirozh and Roza) are participated in this event. The computer Engineering department prepared brochure, requirements for applying to CPE and some reports that helps new students to understand the department.
